Football sprint drills should show work and rest

Yes. Football sprint drills should include sprint duration and recovery length alongside distance, reps, sets and modality, because the work-rest shape changes fatigue, sprint quality and likely adaptation.

The simple problem is that a sprint drill is not fully described by distance. “6 × 30 m” tells you how far the player runs, but it does not tell you whether the session is a speed-quality drill or a fatigue drill. Six 30 m sprints with two minutes of rest is a very different session from six 30 m sprints with 15 seconds of rest.

That missing rest detail changes what the player experiences. Longer recovery gives the player more chance to sprint fast again. Shorter recovery turns the same distance into a more tiring repeat-effort task. So the written drill plan should say the work time and the recovery time, not just the metres.

Research on HIIT and repeated-sprint training backs up that coaching reality. Programming reviews such as Buchheit and Laursen Part I and Part II treat work duration, rest duration, intensity, reps, sets and between-set recovery as core variables. In plain terms: if you change the rest, you change the drill.

Rest length changes the session

Repeated-sprint training usually means short maximal efforts with short recovery. Thurlow et al.’s 2023 team-sport meta-analysis defined it as maximal efforts of 10 seconds or less with recovery of 60 seconds or less. The review also found a practical pattern: more rest was linked with lower lactate, faster average sprint time and less sprint drop-off, while longer sprint distances were linked with more fatigue.

That is why two sessions that look similar on paper can train different qualities. If the aim is maximum speed, the player needs enough rest to keep the sprint fast. If the aim is repeated-sprint tolerance, shorter rest may be useful because the player has to sprint while tired.

Controlled sprint studies show the same idea. In Balsom et al.’s 15 × 40 m experiment, shorter rest made performance drop earlier and raised blood lactate. In Iaia et al.’s football study, changing passive recovery between 15 and 30 seconds changed the training response even though the sprint distance stayed at 6 × 30 m.

GPS does not replace the written drill plan

GPS and speed-zone reports are useful, but they answer a different question. They show what happened: distance covered, sprint distance, peak speed and efforts above certain velocity bands. They do not fully explain how the drill was prescribed.

That matters because speed-zone thresholds are not perfectly standard. Gualtieri et al.’s 2023 review found no single agreed sprint threshold in professional football. Ravé et al. also note that GPS load depends on things such as rules, player numbers, duration and pitch area.

So the best approach is to use both. The coach writes the intended drill clearly, then GPS checks whether the intended exposure actually happened.

State the aim, not just the activity

The written drill plan should make the coaching aim obvious. A sprint drill might be used to protect top-speed quality, build repeated-sprint ability, expose players to high-speed running, or add fatigue before a tactical block. Those are not the same job.

Field-based repeated-sprint training can help football players, but the transfer is specific. Chen et al.’s 2026 football meta-analysis found improvements in short-sprint ability, repeated-sprint ability, change of direction and high-intensity running performance, while some other qualities did not improve clearly. Bishop, Girard and Mendez-Villanueva also argue that repeated-sprint ability has several limiting factors, so no single drill trains everything.

The practical answer is to write the drill so another coach can understand the intended stimulus without guessing.

A useful way to write the drill would be easier to scan like this:

  • 3 sets × 6 reps × 30 m
  • Work: about 5 seconds
  • Rest: 20 seconds passive recovery
  • Between sets: 4 minutes
  • Format: straight-line sprint
  • Aim: maintain sprint quality under fatigue
  • Check: GPS peak speed and sprint distance

The evidence is strongest for repeated-sprint and HIIT-style prescription, not every open-play sprint in football. Peng et al.’s 2026 caffeine and high-intensity interval exercise meta-analysis only supports the broader point that work-rest ratio can moderate performance, so it should stay as a side note rather than the main football evidence.
