Three tracking numbers from the 2026 World Cup predict when a high press costs more than it wins

Czechia pressed 301 times against South Korea and logged 472 sprints. Heung-Min Son played 72 minutes, hit 35.2 km/h, and targeted the channel behind Czechia’s back line 15 times; a press fails when centre-backs chase too far too often.

Czechia’s four outfield defenders each covered between 9.6 km and 11.4 km across 100 minutes. Son collected two of his 15 offers to receive behind the line.

Korea’s full team registered 14 receptions in behind to Czechia’s five. The press created turnovers — 40 forced — but also opened the space that let Korea’s forwards turn defenders around. The same pattern appeared across the tournament, and three measurable numbers from the group-stage tracking data identify where the physical cost of chasing begins to outweigh the territorial gain from pressing.

Across 54 team-match observations from the 2026 World Cup group stage, teams in the top third of defensive pressures (averaging 332 per match) conceded 2.1 goals. The bottom third (averaging 175) conceded 0.9. Teams that pressed more allowed more receptions behind their defensive line (r = 0.58), and the relationship held on every match day. 6

Opponents of the heaviest pressers completed 14.2 receptions in behind per game on average. Opponents of the lightest pressers completed 6.7. That gap — more than double — shows how much space a high line opens for opponents.

A high defensive line compresses the distance between the back four and the halfway line, leaving 30 to 40 metres of grass between the last defender and the goalkeeper. FIFA’s Enhanced Football Intelligence tracking measures this gap as the distance from the deepest outfield player to the goal line at each frame. 4 A higher line leaves more grass for a single pass behind the centre-backs. A well-timed run and a weighted pass are enough to reach that space.

Defenders sprint to recover, not to press

Centre-backs and full-backs in a high line are not sprinting to press. Lobo-Trivino et al. (2024) tracked 1,848 sprint actions across 42 matches and found that 42.5 percent of central defenders’ sprints were recovery runs — turning and accelerating toward their own goal. 1 Wide defenders showed a similar distribution at 35.1 percent. Forwards and attacking midfielders, by contrast, devoted most of their sprint budget to pressing and penetrative running. Defenders sprint mostly in reaction to opponents, not in pursuit of the ball.

A direct pass in behind guarantees at least one recovery sprint from a centre-back. Each recovery action involves a hard deceleration to near-zero, a 90-to-180-degree pivot, and a full re-acceleration. A turn-and-sprint costs less energy than a straight sprint. Bujalance-Moreno et al. (2016) measured the energy cost of change-of-direction sprints with 90-degree turns at 142.1 J/kg, compared to 168.4 J/kg for straight-line efforts of equal distance. 2 Eccentric contractions during deceleration demand two to six times less metabolic energy per unit of work than concentric contractions. 2

A single recovery sprint is cheaper than a straight pursuit, but the braking and turning load the muscles differently. Each deceleration-pivot-reacceleration cycle loads the quadriceps eccentrically and stretches the hamstrings under peak force. The deceleration phase specifically demands rapid eccentric braking that generates force spikes well above what a steady-state jog produces.

Four or five recovery runs per half start to damage the quadriceps and hamstrings used to brake and turn. The defender’s braking muscles fatigue well before aerobic capacity runs out. Coaches should not treat repeated recovery sprints as only a conditioning problem. Defenders need eccentric quadriceps and hamstring work to handle repeated braking and turning.

Teams allowing 15-plus receptions behind conceded 2.5 goals per match

Teams that allowed 15 or more opponent receptions in behind conceded 2.5 goals per match (n = 12). Teams that held opponents below 10 conceded 0.9 (n = 28). Defensive-line breaks — a broader category that includes any completed action behind the last defender — followed the same pattern. Fifteen or more line breaks corresponded to 2.3 goals conceded on average; fewer than eight corresponded to 0.9.

Paraguay pressed 360 times with 75 direct pressures, the most aggressive single-match pressing performance in the group stage. The United States completed 21 receptions behind Paraguay’s line, broke through 25 times, and scored three.

Congo DR logged 407 defensive pressures — the second-highest in the group stage — and Portugal responded with 167 offers in behind, collecting 19 receptions. Congo DR’s defenders covered 112.4 km total with 8.3 km of sprinting, but the sprint budget was spent chasing rather than pressing.

Direct pressures are pressures applied to the ball-carrier within playing distance. The 15 teams that registered the most direct pressures per match conceded an average of 2.0 goals. The 15 with the fewest conceded 1.0. 6

Total sprint distance hides the shift from pressing to chasing

High-pressing teams that faced heavy behind-the-line targeting (100 or more opponent offers in behind, n = 13) averaged 7.5 km of sprint distance per match, 0.3 km below the tournament mean. Their defenders still sprinted, but more of those sprints went back toward their own goal rather than forward into the press. Total sprint distance held steady or even dropped because defenders replaced pressing sprints with recovery runs.

Chen, Zmijewski, and Bradley (2025) established the positional baseline at Euro 2024. Centre-backs averaged 130-140 m of sprinting distance per match above 25 km/h. Full-backs and wing-backs led all positions in sprint output. 3

A centre-back forced into four or five recovery sprints per half at top speed adds roughly 80-120 m to that baseline, nearly doubling the normal centre-back sprint load across 90 minutes.

Czechia’s Robin Hranac logged 41 sprints in 100 minutes against Korea (37 per 90), more than double the 15-20 sprints per 90 that the Euro 2024 reference data establishes for centre-backs at the 85-percent-of-max-velocity threshold. 1 3 Chaloupek and Zeleny, the full-backs, each exceeded 46 sprints across 100 minutes. Hranac, Chaloupek, and Zeleny all sprinted far more often than centre-backs and full-backs typically do across a full match.

Korea converted behind Czechia’s line three times as often as South Africa did

Czechia pressed even harder in their second group match against South Africa — 343 pressures, 508 sprints, 8.4 km sprint distance. South Africa collected only eight receptions behind the line compared to Korea’s 14. South Africa actually made more offers in behind than Korea did. South Africa attempted 138 to Korea’s 89. South Africa converted at 5.8 percent. Korea converted at 15.7 percent.

Runs that clear the last line count more than the raw number of offers. A high conversion rate means the attacker’s timing run arrives after the defender has committed forward, and the passer has the weight and angle to clear the last line.

Son made 15 offers in behind from 72 minutes — one every 4.8 minutes — and each was timed to the moment a Czechia defender stepped into the press. Lee Jaesung added 11 offers in behind from 65 minutes and collected four receptions, the highest individual count in the match. Korea made 89 total offers in behind, compared to Czechia’s own 82 against Korea’s lower line. Both teams tried to play behind the opponent. Korea succeeded because the space behind Czechia’s advanced line was larger and the recovery distance longer.

Three numbers that flag an unsustainable press

Coaches can check three post-match tracking numbers to judge whether a high press is sustainable.

  1. Opponent receptions in behind per match. Teams allowing 15 or more conceded 2.5 goals per match in this tournament. Teams below 10 conceded 0.9. Between 10 and 14 is manageable if the defensive line has centre-backs who can sustain 40-plus sprints per 90 — a mark three of Czechia’s five defenders reached but is not a realistic standard for a seven-match tournament.

  2. Opponent offers-to-receptions conversion rate behind the line. Korea converted 15.7 percent against Czechia’s press. South Africa converted 5.8 percent against the same system. A conversion rate above 12 percent signals that recovery cover is arriving late — either because the press trigger is poorly timed, or because the centre-backs lack the acceleration to close the gap before the attacker controls.

  3. Centre-back sprint count per 90. Hranac’s 37 per 90 against Korea is double the Euro 2024 baseline. A centre-back sprinting above 35 times per 90 across consecutive matches will lose the ability to brake and change direction before losing top speed. That braking capacity is exactly what recovery runs demand.

If opponents complete 15-plus receptions behind at 12 percent or better while a centre-back tops 35 sprints per 90, the back line is spending too much of the match in recovery runs.

Wait to press until the ball-carrier’s head drops or a heavy touch pushes the ball ahead. The back line holds its depth a fraction longer and the recovery-sprint distance shrinks from 30 metres to 15. Pressing on the ball-carrier’s touch rather than on the pass keeps the defensive line deeper for longer, so centre-backs have less ground to recover when a pass does clear them. Czechia still won the ball 40 times through pressure against Korea. Korea still completed 14 receptions behind. The three numbers above tell a coaching staff whether the chasing is worth the turnovers.
