Elliot Anderson takes 302 possession wins into England’s World Cup, but possession-adjusted rates pull Rodri and Curtis Jones level
12 June 2026
Elliot Anderson goes to the World Cup as the biggest statistical outlier in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad. He won possession 302 times for Nottingham Forest this season, and nobody else in Europe’s top five leagues reached 200.
The number is the Opta fact attached to Anderson’s place in Tuchel’s 26. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott finished second on 195. A gap that large is a reason to watch how Anderson wins the ball before ranking him on the number. 1
A separate public recovery count has Anderson at 304, ahead of Wolves’ André on 208 and Scott on 197. The counts and labels do not match Opta’s possession-win wording, so the two databases should not be merged, but they show the same separation. Anderson finished roughly a hundred regains clear of his nearest peer on either count. 2
What the number counts
Opta defines a possession as one or more sequences in a row belonging to the same team, ending when the opposition gains control. A possession win is logged at that change of control, so the number includes more than tackles. 3
Wyscout draws the same line from the other side in its recovery glossary. A recovery is any action that ends an opposition possession and starts the current team’s, and in Wyscout’s data 44% of recoveries are duels, 16% are interceptions, and the rest come from positioning or collecting a loose ball. 4
Chan Yuen Ting, the Hong Kong coach who became the first woman to coach a men’s top-flight team to a league title, explained in FIFA’s post-tournament analysis of the 2023 Women’s World Cup where regains come from. “Players do not go and defend on their own, they wait until the opportunity arises and then activate the press.” A midfielder’s possession win can be his own tackle, the final touch after teammates close the passing lanes, or a loose ball collected after pressure. 5
The opportunity check
A player can only win the ball while the opposition has it. Wyscout’s possession-adjusted glossary makes the point with a 2019 match in which Manchester City held 80% of the ball at Bournemouth. Nathan Aké made ten interceptions to Kyle Walker’s five, and Walker still came out ahead once the counts were adjusted, 14.3 to 7.06. 6
The same check settles whether Anderson’s total is a low-possession artifact. Forest finished the season at 46.7% possession, Bournemouth at 50.1%, Wolves at 42.6%, Liverpool at 59.3% and Manchester City at 60.6%. 10 Scaling each midfielder’s recovery rate to a season spent with the ball exactly half the time barely moves Anderson, whose 304 recoveries become about 285.
| Player | Team | Team possession | Season recoveries | Minutes | Recoveries per 90 | Per 90 adjusted to a 50% share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elliot Anderson | Nottingham Forest | 46.7% | 304 | 3,331 | 8.21 | 7.70 |
| André | Wolves | 42.6% | 208 | 2,762 | 6.78 | 5.91 |
| Alex Scott | Bournemouth | 50.1% | 197 | — | — | — |
| Curtis Jones | Liverpool | 59.3% | — | 1,937 | 6.60 | 8.11 |
| Rodri | Manchester City | 60.6% | — | 1,511 | 6.43 | 8.16 |
The adjustment cuts André hardest because Wolves spent the most time without the ball, and it trims Anderson by half a regain per 90. It lifts Rodri and Curtis Jones level, since Manchester City and Liverpool gave their midfielders the least time out of possession to work in. Rodri’s rate, though, comes from 1,511 minutes, under half of Anderson’s 3,331, and Jones’s from 1,937. 2 9 10
StatsBomb, which introduced possession-adjusted player stats, cautions that adjusted numbers stop behaving like real event counts, and a straight-line scaling like this one is the crudest version of the correction. The fair reading is that Rodri and Jones won the ball about as often as Anderson relative to opportunity, in much smaller samples, while Anderson did it across nearly a full season. 7
Conor Gallagher’s last Chelsea season showed the same suppression in pressing data. He averaged 44.0 high-intensity pressures per 90 for a team with 59.0% possession, and of the twenty-eight nominal central midfielders who recorded more, only five played for teams that kept over half the ball. 8
Heat cuts the press first
Anderson walks into a hot tournament. World Weather Attribution and Imperial College London expect 26 matches at a wet-bulb globe temperature of 26C or above, a scale that combines heat and humidity, and nine of those sit in stadiums without cooling. Five matches are expected at the 28C level where FIFPRO advises postponing play. 11
Heat does not slow everything equally. A British Journal of Sports Medicine analysis of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil found players made 10% fewer sprints and covered less high-intensity distance in the hottest matches, while total distance and peak speed held and passing success actually rose. Players cut the expensive running and kept the technical actions. 12
Collective pressing is the most running-expensive way to win the ball, which makes it the first thing to fade in a hot afternoon slot. A side that cannot spring a full press in those windows wins its ball through individuals instead, the duel taken and the loose ball read early. Anderson’s 302 mixes those regain types in unknown proportion. If a large share of his total came from his own duels rather than collections behind Forest’s press, his ball-winning is the kind that holds up in the heat.
What the flag is worth
Anderson clears the minutes and position-group check too. Among Premier League midfielders this season he ranks first at 8.21 recoveries per 90, ahead of André, Jones and Rodri. A part-time player can lead a per-90 table on a small sample. Anderson led it while playing close to the full season. 9
The public tables stop short of the regain zone and the action type, splits that come only with the event data clubs pay for. Without them, the 302 is a count of how often Anderson won the ball, and nothing about how.
On the public numbers, the flag survives every check that can be run on it. Anderson finished 2025-26 a hundred and seven possession wins clear of every other player in Europe’s top five leagues, and Forest’s share of the ball explains almost none of that gap. England’s group games will show the rest, whether a regain is Anderson’s own duel or a collection after a teammate’s press, where on the pitch he wins the ball, and what he does with the first pass.
