Tunnel vision can make decisive football actions more dangerous

Tunnel vision can make decisive actions more dangerous when a player locks onto the ball or duel and sees the tackle, turn, landing or contact too late to slow down or change shape.

Ten injured young Japanese athletes in a 2026 Frontiers interview study described acute injuries through physical, psychological, cognitive, social, situational and movement themes.

Six of the 10 athletes reported narrowed attention at the time of injury. Five reported high stress, five reported elevated motivation and five reported overconfidence.

One lacrosse player said she was “so eager” to score that “my field of vision narrowed” and she drove into a tight space.

The cross-sport sample cannot estimate football injury rates or prove that tunnel vision causes injuries. It gives staff a concrete moment to look for: the player’s attention narrowed while the action demanded more information.

In football, the danger is the order of events. The player locks onto the ball or duel first, then the tackle, landing, turn or contact arrives while his body is already committed.

Football clips

Football ACL clips point to the actions where narrowed attention could matter. An English professional soccer ACL video analysis studied 124 injury videos from the Premier League and Championship.

Defensive situations accounted for 64% of the ACL injuries in that English sample. Pressing or tackling, being tackled, landing from a jump and regaining balance after kicking accounted for 91% of indirect-contact and non-contact ACL injuries.

A professional male soccer video study looked at neurocognitive errors in 47 non-contact ACL injuries. Twenty-six were pressing-type injuries; 19 of those involved a deceiving opponent action, which the authors interpreted as possible poor motor-response inhibition.

The same study attributed 16 of the other 21 non-contact injuries to attentional errors. A Liga F video study found that pressing or tackling, being tackled and dribbling accounted for 83% of 30 video-analysed ACL tears; 92% of non-contact tears involved motor-response or attentional inhibition errors.

A Norwegian under-21 football incident analysis recorded 52 incidents in 35 official matches. Tackling duels produced 70% of the incidents, and in 19 of 21 offensive tackling-duel incidents the exposed player was unaware of the tackle.

The football clips do not make tunnel vision a single cause. They show the same danger inside football actions: the player is already pressing, tackling, landing or turning while attention or stopping is overloaded.

Late information

A planted player cannot easily reorganise when the ball or opponent moves late. Attention matters most after the body has started putting force into the ground.

A systematic review on cognitive demands and ACL-risk biomechanics included 25 studies from 2,031 records. Higher cognitive demands generally increased biomechanical indicators linked with ACL injury risk during landing and cutting tasks.

The review did not study live football matches, so staff should not stretch it too far. In a clip, narrowed attention matters when it appears with a hard deceleration, plant foot, trunk turn, contact expectation or late opponent action.

Coaching use

The Frontiers interviews linked elevated motivation with narrowed attention, reduced situational awareness and risky play selection. Motivation is not the problem by itself.

Coaches can use the video to make adjustments. Rewind to the frame before the plant, jump, lunge or contact, then check where the player’s head and hips are facing and whether the opponent has already changed the picture.

Pressing drills should include a late ball shift or second runner. The defender still attacks the trigger, but he has to arrive in a shape that can slow down, turn or pull out if the carrier moves the ball.

Landing and tackling work needs the same late-information cue. A player jumping, stretching or tackling for the ball should know where the next contact or landing lane is, not only where the ball is.

Pause each injury clip one frame before the plant, jump, tackle or contact. If the player cannot see the next danger until that moment, the action may need a slower arrival, different body shape or earlier pull-out cue.
