Headed goals do not prove a team is crossing more

Headed goals can rise even when crossing volume falls; count delivery, first contact, shot accuracy, and conversion before calling it a crossing trend.

Headers have fallen from almost one in five Champions League goals in the competition’s first decade to about one in six in the second decade and around one in seven since.1 Those figures describe the body part on the final shot, not how often a team crossed, where the ball came from, or whether the delivery was high, low, early, cut back, open play, or set piece.

Opta separates those fields. A cross is a ball from a wide position targeting teammate(s) centrally near goal, while the body-part field for goals and shots is recorded separately as right foot, left foot, head or other.2 Opta also defines shot conversion as goals divided by shots, shooting accuracy as shots on target divided by attempts, and chance created as assists plus key passes.2 The four separate counts are crosses attempted, chances created from those deliveries, headed attempts, and headed goals.

A team can cross less and score more headers if the few deliveries arrive to better runners, if set pieces improve, if opponents defend the box poorly, or if forwards finish an unusually high share of headed shots. A team can also cross at the same rate and score fewer headers if headed shots miss target, meet better goalkeeping, or arrive from lower-value areas.

Premier League split

Premier League players scored 203 headed goals in 2023/24, a 22.3% rise, while crosses fell to 23.5 per match, down from 42 per match in 2003/04.3 The same season-trends piece then shows where the header total came from: headed shots reached 1,507, headed shots on target 582, headed conversion rose to 13.47%, and the headed-goal share was 16.3% of all goals.3

Seventy matches into 2024/25, Opta counted 29 headed goals, or 0.41 per match, down from 0.53 in 2023/24.4 Crosses per game had barely moved in its calculation, from 34.7 to 33.7, successful crosses stayed at 8.4 per game, and headed shots were slightly up from 4.0 to 4.1 per game.4 The early shift came from finish and accuracy more than delivery volume.

The 23.5 and 34.7 cross-per-game figures come from different calculations. They can explain each article’s own comparison, but they should not be treated as one continuous series.

Delivery type and location

UEFA counted 27% of 2024/25 Champions League league-phase goals as coming from crosses, and 53% of those deliveries came from inside the box.5 Teams scoring from crosses averaged four attackers in the box.5 Those cross goals include cutbacks and low balls arriving to runners, as well as aerial finishes.

FIFA counted 45 goals from crosses at the 2022 World Cup, up from 25 in 2018, while attempts on goal from crosses rose only 12% and goal-scoring efficiency rose from 12.6% to 20%.6 FIFA’s football language included six cross types, including cut-back and push crosses; cut-back goals rose from two in 2018 to seven in 2022, and push crosses rose by 38% in volume.6 Opta lists pull-backs under passes and says crosses are excluded from that pull-back category.2 Because FIFA and Opta classify some deliveries differently, the cross total can move before the header count is compared.

StatsBomb found an average open-play cross conversion rate of 1.76% across the last four full seasons of the big five European leagues, with average completion at 23.58%; crosses from the edge of the box and inside it converted at around 5%.7 The article also warned that the data could not cleanly split low from high crosses, which is the split an analyst needs when judging delivery value.7

From delivery to shot

Alam, Moodie, Wu and Swartz used 2,225 Shandong Taishan 2017 crossing opportunities, including 692 actual crosses, to separate the effect of crossing across all opportunities from the effect in situations where players actually crossed.8 Their matched estimates were 1.6 percentage points more shot probability overall and 5.0 percentage points in the crossed situations, with context variables including score differential, nearest defender distance, nearest teammate distance, distance to the endline, offensive-defensive ratio in the box, crosser position, and the last 10 minutes of a half.8

Start the tag before the cross: game state, pressure on the crosser, distance to the endline, delivery type, height, and attackers versus defenders in the box. Then log first contact, body part, shot location, headed shot on target, xG or chance value, and goal. If crosses rise but headed attempts do not, check whether the ball is reaching target zones. If headed attempts rise but headed goals do not, check accuracy, goalkeeper saves, pressure, and conversion. If headed goals rise while crosses are flat, check set pieces, near-post and back-post movement, and finishing variance.

Across the Champions League history, Premier League season articles, one World Cup, StatsBomb’s big-five sample, and the one-team Shandong Taishan study, a header total remains separate from a crossing total. Keep raw cross-per-game totals inside their provider and season definitions unless a shared event table proves the same event rules. The same caution applies to player ranking tables: the Opta Champions League page’s list and prose disagree on Lewandowski and Kane counts, so a leaderboard should be checked against the underlying Opta feed before publication.1
