What analysts should check before trusting ball-carrying rankings
26 June 2026
Use carry leaderboards to choose clips, then rank players after checking who opened the lane, defender distance, carry end space, next action, and whether his club role gave him repeated runway.
Jake Entwistle said almost every World Cup watch-list player they picked stood out in a carrying variant. 1 His own check was direct. Did someone else create the space, win the ball, or find the carrier first?
Llew Davies gave the same warning from the scout’s side. Ball carrying excites people because it is “so obvious,” but the jump from good carrier to good player is “not as black-and-white as that.”
The metric picks names to watch
Raw carry definitions mostly capture where the ball moved and how far it moved toward goal. They do not prove that the carrier moved a defender, escaped pressure, or created the next action himself.
| Source metric | Qualification rule in the source | Ranking question left open |
|---|---|---|
| Wyscout progressive run | Continuous ball control that moves the team 30m, 15m, or 10m closer to goal depending on zones | Did the carrier beat pressure or run into space already given |
| Stats Perform progressive carry | Opposition-half carry over five metres that moves the ball at least five metres toward goal | Was a defender fixed, bypassed, or forced to cover a new lane |
| Opta carry definitions | Carry of five metres or more, progressive carry of more than five metres upfield, plus distance and directness | Did the carry end with time, space, and a useful release |
Premier League sequences from 2013 to 2018 that contained a progressive carry ended in a shot 7% of the time, compared with 2% of sequences without one. 3
Stop short of ranking the player until the clip shows whether he changed the defence or simply used a lane the match had already opened.
The five clip checks
The most direct public carry checklist adds post-carry shot and pass value, counter-attack context, space at the start and end, nearest-defender distance, tight-space carries, defender-ahead carries, dispossessions, and release timing. 5
| Clip frame | Mark on the review | Player rank moves when |
|---|---|---|
| Receipt | Who opened the first lane and how close the nearest defender was | The player receives with pressure nearby and still turns forward |
| First defender | Whether the defender is behind, beside, or in front | The carrier manipulates or beats the defender instead of only sprinting past open grass |
| Start space | Whether the carry begins in open space or within tight range | The player keeps value when he starts with little room |
| End space | Whether the carry finishes in a pocket or into congestion | The player releases or shoots before the lane closes |
| Next action | Shot, foul won, pass value, turnover, or recycle | The carry gives the team a better action than the one available at the start |
| Role | Whether the club asks him to carry because no one else progresses | The same action appears in different zones and with different amounts of runway |
The receipt and first-defender checks sharpen further with pressure data. Safe retainers, pressured receivers, and press breakers separate by what happens after contact arrives. 6
Marco Verratti’s profile in that case study is the useful carry comparison. He retained possession on 91% of carries under close attention while also taking opponents on, drawing fouls, and moving PSG up the pitch.
Keep safe retention clips and press-breaking clips in separate piles. A player who shields, turns back, and recycles is solving a different problem from a player who receives pressure, carries past it, and makes the next defender step out.
Distance tables mix several football events
Premier League carrying data shows how one distance leaderboard can contain several different actions. John Stones recorded more than 1000m of forward carry distance against Leeds because Leeds more or less allowed him to advance. 7
Mason Holgate’s long carry against Chelsea came in the 91st minute with Everton 1-0 up. The carry moved the ball away from Everton’s goal and killed clock. The same leaderboard metres read as progressive carrying when the value was game management.
Pedro Neto’s counter carry for Wolves beat Matt Targett and forced Emiliano Martínez into a save eight seconds after Neto picked up the ball outside his own box. Jack Grealish’s carries gave Villa shots, fouls, and attacking-third releases, with 1.3 shots per 90 created from carries over 10m.
Tag centre-back invitations, clock runs, counter-attacks, and shot-creating carries before comparing players. The same metres can come from an opponent refusing to jump, a game state that rewards the corner flag, or a carrier who forces defenders to turn and chase.
Role and opponent decide the runway
Entwistle’s Haissem Hassan example is the recruitment warning. Real Oviedo relied on Hassan as a one-man carrying machine, so his La Liga volume reflected both his dribbling quality and a team that needed him to progress almost every attack.
Hassan’s question is transferability. Can he still carry when he receives higher, has less pitch ahead, and faces defenders already set in front of him?
The same role problem is measurable. Normalising player progression by touches still ends with pass-to-carry profiles that depend on league, team, manager, and players. 8
Before ranking a player, compare his carries with the job he was asked to do for his club. A winger in a counter-attacking side may get long lanes after defending deep, while a wide attacker in a dominant side may need to create value against more settled blocks.
Defenders need to be in the frame
The 360 event dataset adds the missing defensive frame. It includes distance to nearest defender, number of defenders goalside, visible players, and receipt-space bands. 9
Those variables change the carry read. A five-metre carry with three defenders goalside and one tight marker is not the same clip as a five-metre carry into an empty channel after the press has already been broken.
Tracking data points in the same direction. A Bundesliga study used player positions to model pitch control, pitch value, and space generation, then linked space-generation measures with xG and xA signals. 10
Carry ranking still needs the clip, the role, and the next action. Tracking can show whether the carrier moved a defender, kept a passing lane open, or entered space a teammate could use, but it still has to be tied back to the decision at his feet.
Pause the clip before first touch, at the first defender, and at release. Mark who opened the lane, how close the nearest defender was, how many defenders stayed goalside, where the carry ended, and what action followed. Then rank the player.
