Palmeiras split rest from return-to-play work during the World Cup pause

Palmeiras gave most of its squad three weeks off during the World Cup pause but kept the forward Vitor Roque at the training centre after ankle surgery, splitting rest from rehab inside the same break.

ge reported that Palmeiras sent most players on three weeks of holiday during the World Cup pause, with a June 21st evening return to the Academia de Futebol, while Vitor Roque kept reporting to the CT to recover from left ankle surgery. The club planned to send the squad a remote activity booklet from its Núcleo de Saúde e Performance near the end of the break, and saw the gap helping Paulinho move closer to full condition. 1

ge’s calendar explainer said the 2026 Brasileirão had moved to a January 28th-to-December 2nd season with a five-week pause for the World Cup; Palmeiras’ own report put the final on July 19th and the 19th-round base date on July 22nd. 2

During a normal fixture run, coaches and medical staff prepare the next match, recover the squad from the last one, manage selection, and fit injured players around the same week. The five-week pause let Palmeiras separate those jobs: send most players away, issue late remote work to the squad, and keep injured players in daily supervised sessions at the CT.

Why the last days of rest still matter

A PLOS One study of short-term detraining and retraining split 20 male semi-professional players into a reduced high-intensity group and a detraining group after the season. Two weeks without activity cut Yo-Yo IR2 and repeated-sprint scores, and repeated-sprint performance took three weeks of retraining to return to baseline. 3

The study tested Korean K3 players after a season, not Palmeiras during a World Cup pause, but its finding explains why Palmeiras sent a remote activity booklet near the end of the holiday rather than asking the whole squad to restart cold on June 21st. Healthy players can take the opening weeks fully off, then use the final days to bring back running, strength, and mobility before the first full training week.

Return-to-play work is a different job

Palmeiras did not publish Vitor Roque’s day-by-day ankle criteria. An IJSPT case report described a professional player working through a nine-phase return-to-performance pathway, with objective exit criteria, gym phases, grass phases, ball work, speed exposure, and GPS data before full team training. 4

That case was a knee injury, so its dates and thresholds cannot be copied to an ankle. Palmeiras reported only that Roque kept working at the CT after surgery while most teammates were on holiday, because his return depended on supervised football and medical progression rather than the squad’s holiday date.

The FIFA Training Centre’s returning-from-injury series covers the stretch from restarting ball work to full team training, dividing it into functional coordination, functional endurance, and functional speed, and notes that most drills need at least three players so the returning player receives and gives the ball rather than running an obstacle course. 5

A Frontiers practical GPS paper named total distance, high-speed running, sprint running, accelerations, and decelerations as the external-load measures for elite soccer. With those numbers, staff can track an injured player’s distance, sprinting, accelerations, and decelerations separately from a rested teammate’s reactivation work. 6

Earlier World Cup-break examples

Chelsea’s 2022 World Cup-break update placed injured players in Abu Dhabi on separate individual programmes: Reece James integrating into training, Wesley Fofana a little behind, Ben Chilwell close to the group but not in team training, and N’Golo Kanté further away. 7

Arsenal’s Dubai camp interview framed the 2022 pause as three weeks of preparation, with players returning in phases by World Cup involvement; Mikel Arteta said every player’s schedule had to weigh games played and days off, with a plan for each one. 8

The examples came from the winter 2022 World Cup break, not the Brazilian 2026 pause; Chelsea and Arsenal each used the gap to stagger players by injury status and World Cup workload, instead of treating the squad as one group.

The limit on the 2026 claim

A BBC summary of FIFPRO’s consensus study said 70 medical and performance experts backed a four-week off-season break, mandatory mid-season breaks, and a four-week retraining period before competition. 9 Gazeta Esportiva reported that Santos also gave its squad holidays during the pause and set a June 22nd return to CT Rei Pelé, without mentioning an injured-player exception or a targeted return-to-play programme. 10

Palmeiras publicly reported all three parts: holiday for most players, late remote work for the squad, and Vitor Roque continuing at the CT. The reporting does not prove every Brasileirão club is using the 2026 pause as a rehab window.

At the end of a pause, staff need to know which healthy players completed the late remote work, whether the first training week restores intensity safely, and which injured players tolerated gym loading, ball work, speed exposure, and GPS load before joining team sessions. Palmeiras reported the public plan without Roque’s exit criteria, so the evidence only says his work stayed inside the CT while teammates were on holiday, not that he will be ready.
