Why matching team training does not show ACL match readiness

In a 100-player ACL series, final rehabilitation matched team-training distance but delivered 26% of match deceleration distance. Staff should clear team training, controlled minutes and normal-role performance as three separate decisions.
Picinini and colleagues’ 100-player ACL case series followed competitive male 11-a-side players through a criteria-based process ending in five on-field stages. The final stage reached several team-training loads while leaving a much larger gap to match play and a specific shortfall in braking. 1
The five-load gap
Typical output in the final stage reached 106% of the team-training benchmark for total distance, 104% for high-intensity distance and 110% for acceleration distance. Peak speed reached 88%, while deceleration distance reached only 48%.

At 106% of team-training total distance, a player may appear to have closed the external-load gap. Figures above 100% of team-training benchmarks for high-intensity running and acceleration do not mean the player completed enough match braking, peak-speed work or total volume.
Against match play, every reported metric remained below the benchmark. Total and high-intensity distance reached 44% and 51%, acceleration distance reached 63%, and deceleration distance reached 26%. Peak speed came closest at 82%, but one speed value does not describe how often or when that speed was reached.
Deceleration produced the largest gap against both references. The study does not establish whether drill design, stage progression or player constraints caused that result, but it shows that accumulating enough distance and acceleration did not automatically accumulate comparable braking distance.
The public abstract reports typical external workloads rather than player-level distributions, positional demands or a validated clearance threshold. Its ratios describe what this programme delivered across one cohort. They do not establish that 44%, 63% or any other value is safe for an individual player.
Three separate clearances
Eppinga and colleagues’ scoping review separated return to participation, return to sport and return to performance. Across 29 studies, most assessment concentrated on sport re-entry, with limited use of on-field, reactive and ecologically valid tests for performance at the previous level. 2
Team participation covers modified or restricted football. Controlled competition adds a planned match role and minute range. Normal-role performance asks whether the player can again sustain the physical, tactical and psychological demands expected before the injury.

Team participation should be assessed against the work the player will actually perform after rejoining. A winger returning as a neutral player in possession drills receives a different exposure from a winger pressing a full-back, recovering toward goal and stopping after repeated wide runs.
Controlled minutes require a written role and expected exposure. A planned 20-minute appearance can then be compared with previous 20-minute windows from the player or suitable peers, including the most demanding short periods rather than a simple fraction of a full match.
Clinical examination, strength, functional assessment, performance testing, elapsed time and player-reported outcomes all appeared in the scoping review. GPS contributes external-load evidence within that broader decision. Distance parity cannot answer knee symptoms, movement quality, strength, confidence or reaction to unplanned football actions.
Open tasks add information that straight running cannot provide. Live opponents force the player to read the ball, alter a run, press, turn and stop without knowing the movement in advance. Staff can then compare the resulting acceleration and deceleration exposure with the role’s match record.
Several matches, rather than only the first appearance, are needed to judge the player’s normal-role performance. Across several matches, staff should check whether the player starts regularly, performs the old role, sustains the required actions and reports confidence, while assessing psychological readiness separately.
Build the benchmark from the player’s football
FIFA’s Qatar 2022 distance analysis recorded an average team total of 108.1 kilometres, including 9,001 metres above 20 km/h and 2,345 metres above 25 km/h. Those figures aggregate outfield players and substitutes, so they cannot serve as individual clearance targets. 3
FIFA’s tracking method covered all 64 matches with a 25 Hz optical system. Team totals excluded goalkeepers and extra time, while the published figures were normalised to regular time plus added time. 4
The USA’s high-intensity and sprint totals were roughly 50% to 100% higher than Costa Rica’s. FIFA connected that contrast to playing style and available space, while Japan’s highest and lowest outputs changed with match duration, possession, pressing and the opponent’s block.
Player-level return decisions therefore need several references arranged by relevance.

A player’s own history gives the closest view of the job they are returning to, provided the club has enough comparable matches. Role-matched peers provide a fallback when the player changed position, entered a new tactical structure or lacks a stable preinjury sample.
Competition averages remain useful for checking scale and identifying unusual team demands. They become misleading when staff divide a team total by ten outfield players or convert one tournament’s average into a universal individual target, because substitutes, roles and tactical contexts shape the total.
Peak periods change the match question
Thoseby and colleagues’ elite-football study analysed 413 full-match observations from 44 players at one A-League club. It measured peak total distance, high-speed distance and average acceleration across rolling windows lasting one to ten minutes. 5
Peak total distance and average acceleration generally began early in each half, with median start times between minutes seven and 17 and between minutes six and 16. Peak high-speed distance was distributed more evenly, so its hardest spell could arrive at almost any stage of a half.
Discrete time blocks underestimated rolling peak total distance by 7% to 10% and high-speed distance by 12% to 25%. Short peak periods were contained within longer peak periods no more than 51% of the time, meaning one demanding block did not consistently capture every type of peak.
A planned late cameo cannot be assumed to avoid high-speed exposure. A player entering after 70 minutes may miss the early peak in total distance yet still encounter the match’s hardest high-speed spell, especially if the score creates repeated transitions.
Final on-field sessions can be checked for repeated one-to-ten-minute periods with live directional play, reactive decisions and transitions. Staff can compare the player’s cumulative output and rolling peaks with the intended role while keeping acceleration and deceleration as separate rows.
The peak study combined acceleration and deceleration into average acceleration, which limits its use for the largest gap in the ACL series. A player can register an acceptable combined value while accumulating different amounts of starting and stopping work. The player’s match stopping demands require separate deceleration data for comparison with rehabilitation.
Tracking definitions also differ across the evidence. FIFA used 25 Hz optical tracking and a high-intensity threshold above 20 km/h, while the peak study used 18 Hz GPS and a threshold above 19.8 km/h. Clubs should calculate rehabilitation and match references within the same system wherever possible.
Reappearance does not complete the return
Follow-up reached 97 of the 100 players at a minimum of nine months and a median of 2.3 years after reconstruction. Eighty-four percent had returned to competition, while ten players had sustained an ACL reinjury. 1
The 84% return figure does not validate any workload ratio as a clearance threshold. The level-four case series had no control group, and the abstract does not link each player’s final-stage exposure with subsequent minutes, performance or reinjury. The 10% reinjury result cannot be attributed to the reported match-demand gaps.
A separate NWSL return study found that 27 of 30 players reappeared after ACL reconstruction at a median 12.1 months. The median share of minutes played fell from 87.9% in the year before injury to 25.1% in the year after. 6
Forwards and midfielders also recorded fewer assists in the year after injury and fewer goals across the two-season comparison. The study used public performance records and contained no rehabilitation-load data, so it cannot identify workload exposure as the cause of those changes.
A first match appearance does not mean that the player has regained her previous minutes, role or output. The 29-study return-to-performance review found that soccer research seldom assessed performance-level demands with standardised, sport-specific and psychologically informed measures. 2
Before the first controlled appearance, staff can write the intended role and minutes beside five separate load rows. They can compare cumulative distance, rolling peaks, starts and stops, then check the football actions and confidence required by the role. Has the player met the hardest period that role can produce, or only the average squad session?
